Is DJI Action 2 a new competitor for action cam crowns?

DJI promised to release a major product season, starting last week with the Ronin 4D movie camera with built-in gimbal. The highly anticipated DJI Action 2 brand new 4K action camera is now available, weighing only 56g, and can be expanded with interchangeable magnetic interlocking modules.

DJI Senior Product Line Manager Paul Pan said: “We stripped our action camera to its basic principles and rebuilt it from the ground up to create DJI Action 2. You can configure this camera for neighbourhood walks, hang gliding, Music festivals, and countless other dynamic moments."

The camera unit is only 39 mm (1.54 inches) square, 22.3 mm (0.88 inches) deep, equipped with a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor and a 155-degree field of view ƒ/2.8 lens. It is controlled via a 1.76-inch 350ppi OLED touch screen and a single power/shutter button on the back, or via DJI's Mimi app and live view.

It has built-in 32Gb storage and IP68 waterproof to 10m. The camera records up to 4K/120fps, and the slow motion option is up to 1080p/240fps. The feature list includes slow motion, super delay, time delay, real-time streaming and UVC (webcam mode). The app is DJI's Mimi, which has an AI editor to create optimistic and shareable videos.

It can be paired with the front touch screen module (64g) or power supply module (56.6g), or used alone. These auxiliary modules are square and can add additional battery capacity, USB-C connector, microSD card slot, and-in the case of a front touch screen module-for copying screens for video blogs and for enabling DJI matrix stereo Additional microphone. The camera alone has 70 minutes of battery life; any accessory pushes it for two hours.

Action 2 also brings an updated version of DJI's electronic anti-shake system RockSteady. It also has a HorizonSteady function that can maintain a horizontal horizon when the camera is oriented, which matches the features of GoPro 10 in terms of image stabilization options. Readers who use other sports cameras may also be interested to note that by default, direct USB file transfers and real-time views during recording are provided.

Launched with the camera is a complete ecosystem of accessories, some of which allow connection to traditional "GoPro" sports camera connectors, including a 60m waterproof case (requires multiple camera modules to be used underwater), and a floating handle (hollow) Enough to surface) camera) and magnetic stand with standard connector.

Some accessories take advantage of the new magnetic mounting system, including a magnetic ball joint adapter mount, which allows multi-functional aiming from a tripod mount.

The new magnetic lanyard is a more independent way to wear the device as a body camera; the lanyard with magnetic support is worn on the neck and under the clothes, while the camera is secured in place by fabric.

One of the new products is a remote control extension pole, which has a detachable remote control with a display and folding tripod legs. Shown here is a magnetic ball joint adapter mount.

DJI Action 2 is available for 399 US dollars / 349 pounds / 609 Australian dollars / 399 euros "power supply combination" (with power module, magnetic lanyard and magnetic adapter bracket) or "dual screen combination" (with front touch screen, magnetic lanyard, Magnetic ball joint and magnetic adapter), priced at US$519/£455/AU$799, representing a significant leap for DJI Osmo Action in 2019, which is DJI’s first action camera.

At the same time, it is announced that the free accessory to be released in the future is DJI Mic, which is a wireless two-channel recording system, which looks a bit like AirPods for vlogger recording. Compatible with Action 2, smart phones and any device with 3.5 mm input, it has a 5.5-hour transmission microphone and a 15-hour charging box. DJI Mic will be listed in January, priced at 329 US dollars / 289 pounds.

DJI's third product of the season will be released on November 5. This time we will hope to have a new drone...
